Highlights:

Tanzania is justifiably noted for its great game parks in the north, particularly Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire but there are two parks in the south that offer a vastly different game experience yet still provide supreme comfort and hospitality.

Selous Game Reserve is the size of Switzerland and represents 5% of all of the Tanzanian land. It is also three times the size of the Serengeti. Combine this with a stay at Ruaha National Park which is truly one of Tanzania’s wildest parks. It is the definition of “Wild Africa."

Finish up with a stay at a luxury resort on the shores of the Indian Ocean and you have a combination that will be the envy of your friends for years to come

Explore: Southern Tanzania

Customizable Itinerary - 12 Days (from $6,550 / person)
Day 1: USA-Tanzania

Today is the day you leave your cares behind and board a plane to begin your Luxury Safari in Southern Tanzania.

Day 2: Arrival in Dar-Es-Salaam

You arrive in the evening and will be met by one of our drivers who will take you to your hotel which has eight elegant rooms and overlooks the Indian Ocean.

Day 3: Flight to Selous Game Reserve

You will be transferred to the airport for a flight to Selous. You arrive at the airstrip in the Selous and are met and transferred to your camp. Selous is a combination of open woodlands, plains and deep forests and, since it is relatively unvisited, game abounds. It also has a large water component of lagoons, sandbanks and lakes all fed by the Rufiji River. Your luxury lodge is situated on the river. Each tent is fully equipped and built on stilts to enhance the game viewing.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: Game Viewing by Boat and Vehicle

To those who know and love the African bush, the Selous is one of Africa’s best kept secrets. It hosted Prince Charles and his sons Princes William and Harry when they were teenagers. As you begin your exploration you will see why. You may start out the morning with a boat ride to visit up close, the many elephants, hippos and crocodiles that inhabit the river. After a break for lunch it may be good to take a vehicle to go in search of lion or the more elusive leopard. As you dine this evening don’t be surprised to look out and see a nearby elephant enjoying its evening meal too.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5: A Walking Safari in search of the Long-Horned Eland

The Selous is the home to a large herd of Eland reputedly with the longest horns in East Africa. Best seen on a walking safari you will set out with an armed ranger (just in case) to explore the reserve at eye level. A late afternoon game viewing by vehicle ends your day. After dinner you turn out the lights and listen to the lions’ roar trying to judge how close…
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6: Selous to Ruaha National Park

Today you will be transferred to the airstrip for a flight to Jongomero Camp in Ruaha National Park. Landing at the airstrip you are met and escorted to the camp. Although the park may be ‘wild Africa’ the camp is an oasis of luxury with eight luxury tents built on stilts and covered with thatch that shields both the tent and the veranda from the sun. Take a refreshing dip in the pool where you are quite likely to get your first game viewing of nearby elephants and hippos. In the late afternoon, head out on a game drive to discover the diversity of this reserve both in flora and in fauna. Top off an elegant dinner by using the camp’s telescope to stargaze.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7: A Day with the Animals

Ruaha holds an incredible amount and array of animals with an estimated 20,000 elephants in the park. Within the park there are over 1,600 species of trees and 530 different species of birds so bring binoculars. Among the mammals, the park possesses one of the largest species counts including all the well-known animals such as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala, eland, hippo, crocodile, lion and leopard. In addition the park is home to lesser known creatures like Sable antelope, lesser kudus and wild dogs. Plenty to see on your game drives.

The temperate seas and proximity of coral reefs ensure a wealth of marine life and interest for those keen on snorkelling. Apart from a variety of colorful fish, dolphins, whales and turtles are frequent visitors to these shores and you are provided with snorkeling equipment so you can snorkel from the shore. For those who prefer a somewhat drier experience, kayaks are available to explore the fresh water lagoon. And when the surf is up, boogie boards provide plenty of thrills in the nearby surf. Nature lovers will also find pleasure close to home. The tropical, coastal forest behind the lodge boasts some 132 different species of trees in many of which one can watch the antics of four species of monkey, including the spectacular black-and-white colobus. Turtles still come to nest along the shores of Ras Kutani in season, with opportunities for interested guests to become involved in the projects that continue to look out for their welfare.
