At the start of a major Hollywood musical, the first images are those of Alpine vistas focusing on the featured player whose first words in song are “the Hills are Alive.” The film, of course, is ‘The Sound of Music’ which put Salzburg on the touristic map and allowed many their first glimpse of the beauty of the Austrian Tyrol. In this suggested program we have combined a stay in Salzburg with additional stays in Kitzbuhel, a picturesque village, and in Innsbruck - the Capital of the Tyrol, and host of the 1976 Winter Olympics.
In this scenario we assume a spring, summer or fall visit but if you wanted to enjoy a winter experience we could offer Salzburg as a picture perfect Christmas town, especially at the time of the Christmas markets. We would then suggest selecting either Innsbruck or Kitzbuhel for a few days of superb skiing and authentic après-ski.

Day 1: Depart USA
Tonight you board an aircraft for the overnight flight to Europe with Salzburg as your ultimate destination.
Day 2: Welcome to Salzburg
You arrive in Salzburg where one of our guides will meet you and escort you to your hotel. You have time to relax before dinner at the rooftop restaurant with views across Salzburg.
Dinner
Day 3: A Day with Mozart
After breakfast, meet your guide for a walking tour of old town in Salzburg with a focus on the places associated with Mozart including his birthplace. After your tour, take some time to explore on your own. In the evening you are transferred to Mirabel Palace where you enjoy dinner and a concert of Mozart’s music.

Day 4: A Day with Maria
This morning you will join your knowledgeable guide to explore the many locations for the movie including the Gazebo from the ‘I am sixteen’ shoot and the fountain and steps where Maria and the children sand ‘Do-Re-Mi.' You can see the building and the lake that served as exteriors for the move version of the Von Trapp home and the real Von Trapp home which is now a Bed & Breakfast. Finish up with lunch as your guide discusses other aspects of the movie.

Day 5: Salzburg to Kitzbuhel
In the morning you are transferred to the station where 1st Class seats are reserved to the Tyrolian town of Kitzbuhel, a world renowned ski resort in the winter and host to one of the most challenging World Cup events. Upon arrival in Kitzbuhel you will be transferred to your family-run hotel where you can enjoy lunch before taking a walking tour of this charming town. Your hotel is right in the heart of town. In the evening, enjoy a dinner with scenic views.

Day 6: A Day in the Alps
In the warmer months, the area switches from skiing to hiking and mountain biking. If you are a novice you can join small group programs during the week days to get you started for no charge. If you are already comfortable hiking you can take the Hahnenkammbanh - a cable car which will take you to the summit of the mountain (5,600ft) which, in winter is the route of the World Cup ski route. You can hike all the way down quite easily and there are mountain huts along the way to refresh and dine. You can also descend part way by cable car and hike the rest of the way. The same applies with mountain bikes which you can rent. In the early evening get a massage at the hotel’s spa before enjoying another fine meal.

Day 7: Kitzbuhel to Innsbruck
After breakfast you will transfer to the station for an express train to Innsbruck the Capital of the Tyrol. Upon arrival you are met by your guide who will take you on an orientation tour of the town before delivering you to your hotel. Enjoy a relaxing dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: A Fairy Tale Come True
Today you will cross the border into Germany or Bavaria to be exact. Your destination is Neuschwanstein and the magnificent Castle at the top of a mountain. Built by King Ludwig, it was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle in the Disney Cartoon Classic, re-purposed to Cinderella’s Castle for the theme parks. It also had a featured role in the finale of the movie Chitty-Chitty, Bang-Bang another children’s classic. In keeping with the fairy tale theme you are taken up to the castle entrance in a horse-drawn carriage.

Day 9: Exploring the Tyrol
You have one day left to enjoy the views and the mountain air. We will provide tickets for the Nordekette Cable Car and the Hungerburg Funicular, both of which will take you out of the town and up into the mountains. You can choose to hike or use mountain bikes. Return to Innsbruck in time to stroll around town before dinner.

In the morning you will be transferred to the airport for the flight back to the USA.
