This tailor-made itinerary allows you to explore England from the center of London to the border of Scotland. Anchoring the itinerary are sites associated with major literary figures, either authors or characters.
Based on the itinerary, the program can be either self-drive or chauffeur-driven. The more budget conscious might look to self-drive if there are two traveling but if there are two or three couples, a private driver may make sense. Start your trip with an immersive stay in the part of London that gave shelter to British writers including Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster as part of “The Bloomsbury Set."

Day 1: Depart USA
Start your discovery of England’s literary heritage with an overnight flight to London and your one of a kind holiday.
Day 2: Welcome to London
You will arrive in London in the morning and be met by one of our drivers who will take you to your hotel which is located in the heart of Bloomsbury. This day is left open to let you explore (or re-visit) some London highlights.
Day 3: Bloomsbury and the British Museum
In the morning you will meet your guide for a private walking tour if the literary haunts of Bloomsbury. You will finish at the British Museum where your guide will give you an overview and then leave you to explore on your own.

Day 4: London to the Lake District
Today you will be transferred to the station to board a train bound for the Lake District, one of England’s most scenic spots. In addition to inspiring Wordsworth, the area was home to and inspiration for Beatrix Potter. You will arrive in Oxenhome and either pick up your rental car or meet your driver/guide. You will enjoy a scenic drive around Lake Windermere before arriving at your hotel which sits on a hill overlooking the lake. It was here that Beatrix Potter vacationed with her family and wrote some of her books including Timothy Tiptoes and Pigland Bland. Later in life she moved to the Lake District and bought this property for the use of her mother.

Day 5: The Potter Legacy
If you are enthralled with the Tales of Peter Rabbit or saw the movie “Miss Potter”, this will be a special day. You will visit Hilltop, her home for many years and the Beatrix Potter Gallery which is located in what was her husband’s law office. You will visit the sites that inspired many of her stories and provided locations for the movie.

Day 6: A Day in the High Passes
Today you will experience some of the most spectacular scenery in England as you follow the old Roman Road passing over the central mountains at Wrynose and Harness passes, the steepest in England. You will visit the remains of Hardknott Roman fort before descending into the valley of Eskdale. Here you will board the Ravenglass Eskdale Steam Railway to Wasdale and Wastwater, England’s deepest lake. Complete your day with a visit to Muncaster Castle and a cruise on Coniston water before returning to your hotel.

Day 7: Vindolanda and Hadrian’s Wall
Leave the Lake District and head north into Northumberland. Visit the restored Roman fort at Vindolanda and see what Roman Garrison life was like. Take a walk along Hadrian’s Wall which the fort was designed to protect. Arrive at your hotel, the ancestral home of Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett. Try the spa or a dip in the indoor pool.

Day 8: Blooms and Broomsticks
Make your way to Alnwick Castle the home of the Dukes of Northumberland. Visit the interior of the castle and see the grounds around the ramparts which served as the classroom for the Broomstick lessons in the first episode of the Harry Potter saga. The castle was also featured in the last series of Downton Abbey. You will then visit the specular Alnwick Gardens, the pet project of Jean, the current Duchess of Northumberland.

Day 9: Herriot Country and the Bronte Legacy
Today you will be heading back south, gradually making your way back to London. You will drive through the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales made famous by James Herriot in his books including “All Creatures Great and Small”. Heading towards the coast, the landscape becomes more rugged as you enter the Yorkshire Moors made immortal by the Bronte Sisters in Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. From the Moors you proceed into the picturesque town of York.

Day 10: Castle Howard and York Minster
In the morning you will visit Castle Howard one of the most impressive stately homes in England. It was the location of the TV Series “Brideshead Revisited” starring Jeremy Irons and based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh. Return to York to visit York Minster with its impressive nave. It is surrounded by an area known as The Shambles comprising narrow winding streets with art galleries, coffee houses, boutiques and restaurants.

Day 11: Return to London and a West End Finale
Whether you self-drive or have a driver/guide you will take an express train to London where you will be met and taken to your hotel in Bloomsbury. In the evening we will include tickets to a west end theatre performance and make suggestions for a pre-theatre supper, perhaps in Covent Garden?

A driver will be waiting to take you to the airport for your flight back to the USA.
