Day 1: USA-Lima
You board an aircraft for the flight to Lima where you arrive in the late afternoon or early evening. You are met and taken to your hotel where you have a chance to relax, perhaps with a dip in the indoor pool?
Day 2: Cusco and the Sacred Valley
After breakfast you are transferred to the airport for the flight to Cusco. Upon arrival you will be met and taken on a tour of this historic Inca city. You will descend from the fortress of Saqsaywaman crossing the alleys of the colonial quarter of San Blas to the main square. After lunch you can either explore on your own or continue with the guide including the temple of Corinchancha on which the convent of Santa Domingo was built. You also can visit san Pedro market and some art galleries before transferring to your resort in the Sacred Valley.

Days 3: Exploring the Sacred Valley
There are a wide variety of guided excursions for you to choose from over the two day period. They involve walking, hiking or biking and include a picnic lunch on full day excursions. Pick the programs that best meet the needs of the entire family.

Day 4: A Day at Machu Picchu
In this full-day expedition, you travel to the famous historical sanctuary of Machu Picchu, one of the most impressive architectural feats of the Inca civilization and a wonder of the world. The itinerary begins early in the morning as you leave for the Ollantaytambo rail station, located 45 minutes away from your resort, where you take the train to the town of Aguas Calientes. From there, you take a bus to Machu Picchu. You have about three hours to explore this magical site. Once you are done, you leave Machu Picchu to the station and take the train back.

Day 5: Gateway to the Peruvian Amazon
Today you are transferred back to the airport for a flight to Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian Amazon. Upon arrival you will be met by a guide who will first take the family to a captivating Butterfly House with species at home in the Amazon. You then board a boat for a half hour boat ride along the Madre de Dios River where you arrive at the lodge. Check in to your bungalow and then have lunch. In the afternoon take a walk through Concepcion trails, inside private nature trails where you will discover and learn about the primary and secondary rainforest, its components, uses, transformation by man and its relevance for the world. As dusk approaches you will navigate by outboard motorized canoe for a twilight river excursion. You will learn about the river’s ecosystem, Amazonian creeks, nocturnal animals’ behavior, and the southern constellations. After your tour enjoy dinner in the Casa Grande’s dining room.

Day 6: Sandoval Lake and the Canopy Walkway
After breakfast you will walk into the Tambopata National Reserve before reaching Sandoval Lake. Here you will understand why the Made de Dios is called the biodiversity capital of Peru, while learning about the reserve’s conservation efforts and the lake’s formation. Navigate by dugout canoe across the mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, blue and yellow macaw, red howler monkey, black caiman, and one of the world’s biggest fresh water scaled fish, the paiche. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you take a 20 minute ride by motorized canoe to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway where you will learn about its purpose and construction. You will ascend one of the two 98 foot towers and cross the 7 hanging bridges that connect the treetops at 91 feet. Enjoy the breathtaking vistas and the chance to watch the white-throated toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, squirrel monkeys and the three-toed sloth. After descending to ground level you cross a 600 foot wooden bridge over the swamps where you will learn about the flora and fauna of this flooded ecosystem. At night take rainforest excursion to view the nocturnal animals and their adaptive behavior patterns. Return to the lodge for a pleasant dinner.

Day 7: “Nature’s Pharmacy” and Meeting a Movie Star
Today you will be taken to a native farm where you will be able to learn local techniques of cultivation and taste some of the products during the products during the visit. You will then visit the botanical garden to discover the immense variety of medicinal plants considered part of the “natural pharmacy” used by the habitants in the Amazon region. Compare the medicinal uses of local medicine with traditional remedies. After lunch depart in a dugout canoe on Cocha natural pond. Try your hand at native fishing (catch and release) and enjoy observing flycatchers and gray-necked woodrails. Disembark at the remains of Fitzcarrald steamboat, learn about its history and how it inspired the movie “Fitzcarraldo: which won best director at Cannes in 1982. End you day with a pleasant dinner back at the lodge.

Day 8: Chocolate with Nuts
After breakfast you meet your explorer-guide who will explain the importance of the Brazil Nut tree in the local economy of Madre De Dios. You will learn how it is collected using traditional tools and techniques and you can try opening one. After lunch you visit the cacao plantation and take part in the chocolate making process. Learn how to select the fresh cacao fruits, discover how the seeds are fermented and sundried. After peeling the toasted cacao seeds and grinding them into an aromatic paste, you finish up with a selection of treats made from organic chocolate. One final night excursion and then dinner as your jungle adventure begins to wind down but what an exciting adventure it has been.

Day 9: Returning Home
After breakfast you take a ride back to Puerto Maldonado by outboard canoe. Upon arrival, transfer to the airport for a flight to Lima where you connect with your US bound flight.
