Day 4: The Grand Canal and Georgian Dublin
After breakfast you meet your guide in the lobby to begin an exploration of Georgian Dublin using the banks of the Grand Canal as a road map. As you walk along the canal pathway you not only enjoy the pleasures of the canal itself but learn where Restorian and Georgian Dublin began. Through pointing out various sights, your guide will weave a narrative involving literary, artistic and revolutionary connections to the area. At the end of your walk you will be in old docklands, bringing you into the 21st Century since this area has been totally re-purposed as a shopping and entertainment complex. After lunch you have the rest of the day to discover your own personal Dublin. Breakfast and Lunch
Day 5: The Road to County Mayo
In the morning you will be picked up by your driver and taken to the Atlantic Coast of Ireland and charming County Mayo. This is “The Quiet Man” country and in fact your hotel was where the principal actors stayed including John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Barry Fitzgerald. The area around the hotel was the location for much of the movie and your driver will give you a scenic tour before arriving at your iconic hotel, Ashford Castle. There has been a castle at this location since the 13th Century but it was not until the 19th Century that the Guinness family bought it as a country house and turned it into the showcase that it remains today. After checking in and exploring the grounds you can channel the movie by dining at Cullen’s a thatched roof cottage located just over a small bridge from the castle and named after a former concierge at the castle.
