Day 3: English Market, Titanic and the Emigrant Experience
After a Full Irish Breakfast you will be ready for a full day of exploring the surrounding area. Your guide will take you inland to the university town of Cork. You will tour the highlights of the city and then stop for a visit to English Market which has been around for over a hundred years but is, today, a contemporary foodies’ mecca. Within the market is the best of Irish produce either fresh or cooked. Here you find seafood, smoked salmon, Irish Lamb and many other treats. As a suggestion you may want to pick up a few items for an impromptu picnic when you reach Cobh. Cobh (pronounced Cove) was previously called Queenstown. In the late 19th and early 20th Century it was a stopping point for transatlantic ships sailing from Southampton or Liverpool in England. They would stop in Queenstown to pick up passengers, primarily 3rd Class (or steerage) who were looking for a better life in the new world. Titanic followed this pattern but never made landfall after sailing into the Atlantic. You will visit the Cobh Heritage Centre which describes the immigrant experience and the last voyage of the Titanic. Return to Kinsale for an excellent dinner in one of the seafood restaurants.
Breakfast and Dinner
Day 4: Driving the West Cork Coastline
Today you head to Killarney but skip the faster inland route and experience the beauty of the West Cork Coastline. Starting in Kinsale you will head south passing through or stopping at scenic points and quaint coastal villages like Ballinspittle and Clonakilty. As you enjoy the scenery you appreciate someone else doing the driving. Stop in the fishing village of Baltimore and have a pub lunch before heading inland passing through Bantry and Ballylickey before arriving in Killarney.
Breakfast and Lunch
Day 5: Enjoying Killarney
Start your day at Ross Castle where you board a traditional open boat for a cruise through the three Killarney Lakes. Your cruise ends at a local cottage restaurant where you have lunch. You then meet up with your ‘Jarvey’, which the name is given to the drivers of the horse-drawn Jaunting Car. The Jarvey is a combination of guide and storyteller who will take you through the Gap of Dunloe filling you in on the history and gossip of Killarney. Tonight we recommend visiting one of the pubs famous for fish and chips like Quilan’s or Danny Mann’s. Finish up the evening with some Irish music at a singing pub like the Laurels. You can listen or sing along. Breakfast and Lunch
Day 6: Exploring the Ring of Kerry
Today you take a scenic tour around the Ring of Kerry. During your day you will travel through Killorglin, by Caragh Lake and Glenbeigh where you get your first view of the Atlantic at Rossbeigh. You will visit Kells and Cahersiveen where Valentia Island is visible offshore. Stop for lunch and then continue to Ballinskelligs and Coomakista Pass before arriving in Kenmare. On your way back to Killarney you get superb views of the lakes from Molly’s Gap and Ladies’ View before arriving back in Killarney. This evening you might want some Lobster and, if so, Gaby’s should be of interest.
Breakfast and Lunch
Day 7: Discovering the Gaelic Tradition of the Dingle Peninsula
Because of its location on the south west of County Kerry and the one time prohibitive Conor Pass, the Dingle Peninsula stayed true to its Gaelic roots with Gaelic still being the language spoken by most inhabitants. It is also a center of traditional Irish music. All this culture is surrounded by water and stunning scenery such that it was selected by the Director David Lean for his telling of the best-seller ““Ryan’s Daughter”. You will climb over the Conor Pass into Dingle and then tour around the peninsula before returning to Killarney. Tonight you can relax at the hotel.
Breakfast and Dinner
Day 8: The Cliffs and the Castle
After breakfast you meet up with your guide to head north up the Atlantic coast to the Limerick area. Along the way you will stop at the five mile strip known as the Cliffs of Moher which command one of the most incredible views in Ireland. On a clear day you can look out and see the Aran Islands which like the Dingle Peninsula are Gaelic speaking. The cliffs rise from Hag’s Head to the south and reach their highest point of 642 feet just north of O’Brien’s Tower, which was constructed in 1835 by Cornelius O’Brien ( a descendant of Brian Boru) You stop for the chance for lunch at a pub before arriving at Dromoland Castle.
Breakfast and Dinner
Day 9: A Day at Dromoland
You have the whole day to do as much or as little as you want. With a history stretching back to the 5th Century, the castle was originally the ancestral home of one of the few families of Gaelic Royalty, direct descendants of Brian Boru the first High King of Ireland. Surrounded by acres of magnificent lawns, the castle overlooks its own glistening lake. There are many activities to choose from. If you are a dedicated golfer there is a championship course. If you are a novice there is a golf academy. Tennis anyone? If not how about horse riding, fishing, archery, clay shooting or even falconry Visit the spa and then do laps in the heated indoor pool or just sit in the library with a good book. Breakfast and Dinner
Day 10: Return to USA
In the morning you will be transferred to either nearby Shannon airport or Dublin airport in time to catch your flight back to the USA.
