Day 4: Lisbon Monuments, the Estoril Coast and Sintra
After breakfast you will meet your guide in the hotel lobby and embark on a tour of Lisbon’s highlights relating to the age of exploration. During your walking tour you will see the statue of Vasco da Gama who led much of the explorations for Portugal. You will also see the Jeronimos Monastery and the Belem tower unofficial symbol of Lisbon. You will then visit the Royal Coach Museum with one of the world’s largest collection of coaches used by the royal family and by other royalty throughout Europe. You will then drive along the Estoril coast. You will pass by the resort town of Estoril which is famous for its casino. You will then arrive in the fishing village of Cascais. Although some fishing boats still remain, the town has become gentrified and is now noted for its high quality restaurants (many on the beach) with an emphasis on seafood. Your ultimate destination is the hilltop town of Sintra which was the summer playground of the Royal family and the nobility and is still frequented by the wealthy. You will visit one of the palaces which have, like many other edifices in the area, an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ quality. After touring the palace you return to Lisbon.

Day 5: Evora and the Alentejo Vineyards
Today your guide will take you to the central part of Portugal known as the Alentejo. Since Roman times it has been known for its wines both white and red. It is also known for its scenic beauty. The major town in the Alentejo is Evora; a walled city dating to Roman times as indicated by the well-preserved Roman Temple built in the 1st Century AD and dedicated to the Goddess Diana. You will get a tour of the city with its quaint, narrow pathways many now housing restaurants with well-deserved reputations. You will also two noted vineyards. The first is the Santa Rita Winery where you will tour the vines and taste a variety of their offerings. You will also enjoy lunch with a selection of their wines. In the afternoon visit Adega de Cartuxa and sample their fine wines.
Breakfast and Lunch
Day 6: A Private Portuguese Cooking Class
Today you combine a cooking event with a “meet the locals” experience as you are transferred to the nearby suburbs to a private home where the husband and wife team will guide you through a private cooking class which will also serve as lunch. You will start with wine and appetizers as you discuss the dishes to be prepared. Once completed, the meal is served along with wine and a variety of desserts. After the meal you are returned to the city.
Breakfast and Lunch
Day 7: Channeling Vasco
The morning is left open for you to do some shopping or private exploring. At midday you will be transferred to a jetty on the Tagus River where you board a private sailing yacht for a cruise on the Tagus River. As you leave the shore and watch the sails unfurl you can look back to Vasco da Gama and his contemporaries as they left from the same location to discover new worlds in South America, China and Africa. You will discover an excellent lunch and, unlike, Vasco, return to port the same day and your comfortable hotel.
Breakfast and Lunch
Day 8: Return Home
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for the return flight to the USA.
