Day 1: Depart USA
You depart on your overnight flight to Budapest as you anticipate your elegant Hungarian holiday.
Day 2: Welcome to Hungary
Upon arrival in Budapest you are met by your guide and taken to your hotel. This charming capital is bisected by the Danube River with hills and valleys on the Buda side and the flat, low-lying Pest on the other. Take the rest of the day to explore the area around the hotel.
Day 3: Pest and Marguerite Island
In the morning you meet your guide for a personalized tour of Pest including Heroes’ Square, Vajdahunyad Castle, Andrassy Street, the Opera House, St Stephen’s Basilica and the Parliament Building. After time for lunch and shopping you board a boat for a cruise on the Danube to Marguerite Island, the island is very much like the parks of Paris as you stroll among the trees and pathways in the middle of the river and the city. We will provide recommendations for dinner this evening.

Day 4: Esztergom and the Danube Bend
After breakfast you will leave the city for an excursion to Danube Bend, considered by many to be one of Hungary’s most beautiful regions. Your first stop will be Esztergom which is the center of the Catholic Church in Hungary. You will have a chance to visit the Basilica before moving on to Visegrad, once a royal seat, where you can enjoy some of the most beautiful panoramas in the country. After lunch you drive to Szentendre, a picturesque Baroque town noted for its winding streets. The town is famous for its artists and the many museums including the Kovacs Margit Ceramics museum which you will visit before returning to Budapest.

Day 5: House of Wines and a Gypsy Serenade
Today your guide will show you the Buda side of the Danube beginning with the Castle district and a visit to Matthias church, Budapest’s most famous church and dating back to the 13th Century. You will then visit Fisherman’s Bastion, a neo-Romanesque edifice with seven towers built on medieval walls offering spectacular views of the city. Even better views are available from the top of Geller Hill, the last stop on your tour. After time to have lunch you visit the House of Wines to sample a wide variety of Hungarian wines. In the evening you will enjoy a dinner with wine and gypsy music.

Day 6: The Vineyards of Tokaj
After breakfast you leave the city and head to the Tokaj (pronounced Tokay) wine region. Like Riesling and Sauterne,, the sweet wine is made from grapes that have been left to get overripe and thus increase their sugar. This ancient wine was once a favorite of Nobility including Louis XIV of France and Peter the Great of Russia. You will have lunch followed by a tour of the vineyards.

Day 7: Hortobagy National Park
Today you will drive on the Puzsta, the great Hungarian Plain which continues to the east and becomes the Steppes of Russia. Upon arrival you have lunch at a Czardas restaurant with gypsy music. You then take a carriage ride and watch an equestrian show and then visit some unusual animals including long-horned Hungarian Grey Cattle, the spiral-horned Racka Sheep and buffalo herds in open pastures. You might also see some Lipizzaner foals since, while they may be trained in Austria, they are born in Hungary. Return to your hotel near Tokaj.

Day 8: The Shores of the Hungarian Sea
Your guide will be taking you to Lake Balaton which is the largest lake in Central Europe and often called the Hungaria Sea since Hungary has no access to a port. When you arrive at the lake you board a ferry to Tihany Peninsula, one of the lake’s most scenic and historic areas. Upon arrival you will visit the Benedictine Abbey then proceed to Balatonfured and your hotel.

Day 9: Day at Leisure
You have the day to relax and enjoy the lake. Close to the hotel is a wooden boardwalk with cafes and wine bars. You can rent a sailboat or a pedal boat or you can relax at the spa.

Day 10: Castle Festetics
After breakfast you will drive to Kesthely where a local guide will take you on a personal tour of Castle Festetics, a 101 room tribute to the Baroque and reminiscent of the great French Chateaux. After a detailed tour you rejoin your regular guide for the ride to Nagycenk where you have lunch at Castle Szechenyi. After lunch you proceed to Sopron and your hotel.

Day 11: Eger and “Bull’s Blood”
Today you will travel to the town of Eger which is surrounded by hills covered with vines from whence comes the famous “Bull’s Blood” red wine. Eger is also one of the most beautiful towns in Hungary with a Turkish past due to the Ottoman invasion. Enjoy wine with dinner at your hotel.

Day 12: Discoveries in Pecs
In the morning you will depart for Pecs where you arrive about lunch time. After lunch in a local restaurant your guide will take you on a private and informative tour including Kossuth Square, the Mosque of Pasha Ghazi Kassim and the Mosque of Yakovali Hassan with its minaret. Next you will visit St. Peter’s Cathedral before finishing your day at the ancient Roman burial chambers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 13: Castle Esterhazy and a Danube Dinner Cruise
From Pecs you drive to Castle Esterhazy which is more of a palace than a castle. It was here that Joseph Haydn both composed and performed under the sponsorship of the Princes of Esterhazy. After a tour, you return to Budapest. In the evening celebrate your stay in Hungary with an elegant dinner cruise on the Danube.

Day 14: Return to USA
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for the return flight to the USA arriving back the same afternoon.
